Now, only 20 percent of Delaware’s forests remain. Fortunately, Pemberton Forest, located in Sussex County, is a high-priority preservation area for the Nature Conservancy. 8 million. Together, these two tracts that make up the preserve help protect streams, wetlands, habitat for rare plant and animal species, and are the best examples of bogs and Atlantic cedar swamps that Delaware has to offer. Also, Pemberton is the only location where the curly-grass fern can be found in Delaware. To protect Pemberton Forest Preserve, the Nature Conservancy has taken on what it considers the largest forest restoration project ever for the state of Delaware.
The islands provide pathways from one natural area to another to optimize habitat space for plants and animals. A few waterways will be impacted by this restoration project. The Ponders tract is home to a shallow creek called Ingram Branch that flows into the Broadkill River. The Broadkill then empties into the Delaware Bay. Restoration of Pemberton Forest preserve protects the water quality of these local waterways that eventually impact the health of larger bodies of water, including the Atlantic Ocean.
It is located approximately five miles west of the city of Harlan, sometimes referred to as “bloody Harlan” because of its history of violence related to coal miners struggling with corrupt coal companies for better wages and safer working conditions. It is a link to the past when white settlers and pioneers traveled through its ridges and hollows, and a window into the region’s Native American history. Spears and arrowheads can still be found within the lush vegetation that some say resembles a tropical rainforest.
