Summary We have described the implementation of a dual-window multi-gigabit WDM research network over the existing interoffice fiber plant using advanced optical technologies. Several SONET/ATM network experiments were performed and service applications were demonstrated using ATM switching and OC-3c and DS3 interfaces. 7. Most of the connections between research nodes are between ethernet networks. A number of tests have been undertaken, however, to provide ATM from desktop to desktop, a feature which will be used increasingly in future communication networks. The research network provides facilities for testing different ATM and mixed network architectures. There is access to satellite services through the CRC and Telesat nodes. Experiments are planned to develop interactive services which can be delivered over the satellite networks to remote locations.
