My interest was in energy efficient renovations. I reasoned that to understand how best to influence homeowners’ renovation decisions, I needed to understand those decisions. I reviewed decision models from various disciplines and used them to design a survey for testing a host of hypotheses about decision-making. The survey went out to around 800 homeowners who were either contemplating, midway through, or had recently completed a home renovation. Comparing these cross-sections allowed me to see how the determinants and structure of the decision changed through the process.

Conducting a study in an emerging field makes it more difficult to see where the study fits as compared to a disciplinary study that digs deeper into a given field. The nature of an emerging field is its unknown character, the vast landscape of the undiscovered. A contribution in a dark seemingly endless space may seem both miniscule and humongous compared to a similar contribution in a fairly well-known field. With no or few points of reference it is hard to know when a contribution is “sufficient”.

For my dissertation, the integration of knowledge from different disciplines applied to both concepts (as above) and also methods. As part of a mixed methods dissertation I conducted both in-depth semistructured interviews, and also ethnographic participant observations. Had I not done the ethnographic data collection as a complement to the interview data I would not have adequately understood the tension (experienced by specialists) that a full realization of the impacts of climate change has for biodiversity conservation decision making.
