Examining the hands may reveal cyanosis and tar-staining of the nails and finger. Clubbing is not found in COPD and may suggest the presence of a lung malignancy or other disease such as bronchiectasis. The hand may flap (tremor), suggesting carbon dioxide retention and may also be associated with a bounding pulse.
